India’s supersonic cruise missile,  BrahMos, is getting attention from different parts of the world. According to a report, a delegation of senior officials led by Sanjay Jaju, Additional Secretary (Defence Production), Ministry of Defence (MoD) and representatives of several public and private sector companies from the defence sector will travel under the umbrella of FICCI to Brazil, later this month. It is likely that there will be a discussion on BrahMos too.

The companies going to Brazil for discussion are: Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited; Bharat Dynamatics Limited; Bharat Electronics Limited; C2C DB Systems; Centum Electronics; Dhruva Aerospace; GRSE; Larsen & Toubro Limited; Maharashtra Minerals Corporation Limited; Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders; MKU Limited; Ocean Marine Environment Coatings Pvt Ltd; Pushkak Products Pvt Ltd; SMPP Pvt Ltd; SSS Defence and more.

In 2020, Brazil was ostensibly planning to equip its under-construction nuclear attack submarines with BrahMos. A Brazilian official was quoted as saying, “Because the existing fleet of submarines will undergo mid-life refit as well as capability enhancements. And these platforms can be a potential user for BrahMos-NG.”

The Brazilian official also said that the missile could arm the new Gripen single-engine fighter aircraft, giving them superior firepower and strike abilities.

“For Brazil, the Indo-Russian missile BrahMos-NG can be a suitable choice for their new Gripen aircraft. The new BrahMos-NG systems are designed for a wide range of fighter aircraft platforms with best in class specifications,” he stated

“The Brazilian aircraft Embraer can also be a suitable platform for BrahMos –NG,” he had added.

Philippines is the first foreign customer of Brahmos. Their Navy equipping itself with BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is being considered a game-changer in South China Sea.
