On January 7, Iran deployed an advanced long-range Nazir radar in the mountainous region of Gilan province in the northwest of the country.

Pro Iran media claims–this radar is intended to bolster Iran’s air defense by providing airspace control within an 800-kilometer detection radius, covering areas including Azerbaijan, eastern Turkey, Georgia, western Turkmenistan, part of southwestern Kazakhstan, and the Caspian Sea.

The system is capable of detecting low-visibility objects with minimal radar reflection, such as UAVs, stealth aircraft, and cruise missiles at altitudes of up to 30 kilometers. It can identify various targets with low radar cross-sections, including drones and cruise missiles.

With the Nazir radar in Gilan, Iran’s air defense will cover the entire airspace over Azerbaijan’s government, Armenia, Following the Israeli airstrikes on Iran on October 26, 2024, during which the Caspian Sea airspace—likely in cooperation with Azerbaijan—was used to target Shahroud facilities, the Nazir radar now ensures continuous monitoring of the skies over Baku and the Caspian Sea, ready to counter any hostile actions.
