India has entered into an agreement with Russia to procure Kalibr-PL anti-ship cruise missiles, enhancing the firepower of its Kilo-class submarine fleet.
The deal was finalized in the presence of India’s Defence Secretary, Rajesh Kumar Singh, as announced by the Ministry of Defence on the X social media platform on February 4, 2025.
According to the post on X, these anti-ship cruise missiles will considerably strengthen the combat capabilities of the Indian Navy’s submarine fleet.
On February 6, 2025, Sputnik India shared an update on the X platform, confirming that the India-Russia agreement involved KALIBR-PL anti-ship cruise missiles. Over the past two years, Russia has extensively deployed Kalibr missiles in its military operations in Ukraine.
The Kalibr series of subsonic cruise missiles consists of the 3M-54 anti-ship missile (ASM), the 3M-14 land-attack missile, and the PT91 anti-submarine warfare (ASW) torpedo. The export versions of these weapons are labeled as 3M-54E, 3M-14E, and PT91E, with “E” signifying Export-Oriented (Eksportny).
The Indian Navy operates both the ‘Club-S’ and ‘Club-N’ variants for its Kilo-class submarines, known as the Sindhughosh-class in Indian service, and the Talwar-class frigates, respectively.
