The Bangladesh Army has recently received a batch of Turkish-made MKE Boran 105mm howitzers, marking a significant enhancement in its artillery capabilities. According to unofficial sources, the army has procured 18 units as part of an initial agreement, some claim that BD Army may expand the fleet to over 200 in the near future.

Strategic Acquisition Under the 2023 Agreement

Under an agreement signed in 2023, Bangladesh is set to receive 18 BORAN howitzers. These lightweight, air-transportable artillery systems offer a range of 17 kilometers with M1 standard ammunition and up to 21 kilometers with long-range ammunition, significantly boosting the army’s firepower.

The BORAN howitzer is actively in service with the Turkish Armed Forces and has also been adopted by several other nations. Developed by Turkish defense manufacturer MKE Inc., the system was initially designed to support internal security operations for the Turkish military’s commando brigades. Initially, the Turkish military planned to add 106 units to its arsenal, but the demand later increased to more than 150 units. The BORAN was first airlifted via helicopter in 2018 and officially entered service in 2021.

In addition to Bangladesh, North Macedonia has also reportedly signed agreements to acquire the BORAN system from Turkey. MKE Inc. recently confirmed that the inspection procedures for the BORAN howitzers designated for an undisclosed Asian country have been successfully completed, further reinforcing Turkey’s growing presence in the global defense market. Turkey is also pitching it to Malaysia.
