MP K. Vanlalvena Advocates for Inclusion of Chinland Council Amid Myanmar’s Political Turmoil.
Amid the ongoing political instability in Myanmar, Mizoram MP K. Vanlalvena has made a significant move by visiting the Chinland Council, a rebel group controlling north-western parts of Myanmar near the Indian border. During his visit, he urged them to consider joining the Indian Union, emphasizing the deep-rooted ethnic and cultural ties shared between their communities.
Mr. Vanlalvena, a Rajya Sabha MP from the Mizo National Front (MNF), crossed into Myanmar on foot and held discussions with the council members. He highlighted that, in the absence of an official government in Myanmar, strengthening bonds between the two regions is crucial. His aim was to “forge friendship and brotherhood,” given that the Chinland Council has been governing the region bordering Mizoram for the past six months.
Since the military coup in Myanmar in February 2021, several ethnic armed insurgent groups have taken control of different regions, pushing the country into further instability. The coup led to an influx of over 40,000 refugees from Myanmar’s Chin-Kuki-Zo ethnic group into Mizoram. These refugees were provided shelter and aid by the MNF-led government at the time.
He stated that he had informed Mizoram Governor V.K. Singh and the Assam Rifles before making the cross-border visit, the Hindu reports. He also assured that he would brief the Union Home and External Affairs Ministers on the details of his discussions with the rebel outfit. Mr. Vanlalvena’s outreach signifies a strategic move to strengthen Indo-Myanmar relations at the grassroots level while acknowledging the shared heritage between the Mizo and Chin communities. His initiative also underscores India’s interest in maintaining stability in the border regions amidst Myanmar’s ongoing internal conflict.
