Silhouettes in the Mist: Farewell to the MiG-21

This day last year on the 26th of September a final farewell was given to the Last Catwalk of the Delta Queen

The Delta-Winged Matriarch

She wore the sky like a silk saree,

yet her heart was pure, unyielding titanium.

A sleek, silver needle stitching together the clouds of Punjab,

and piercing the humid air of the eastern borders.

With a Tumansky R-25 throbbing deep within her chest,

she did not just fly—she tore through the heavens,

leaving a wake of thunder and a legacy of blood, sweat, and glory.

The Final Crimson Sunset

On a cold morning in February 2019, they said she was too old to fight. They whispered that her 1960s bones were brittle, that the world had left her behind.

But they forgot who she was.

With an upgraded Kopyo radar acting as her new eyes and an R-73 missile under her wing, the old lady roared into the Kashmiri sky one last time. In a breathless clash of generations, she reached out and brought down a modern Goliath. It wasn’t just a kill; it was her defiance against time itself.

Now, the hangars at Uttarlai are quiet. The smell of aviation fuel, the high-pitched whine of her starter cart, and the violent shake of her afterburner are gone. The hangars of the No. 3 Cobras and No. 23 Panthers stand silent, filled only with echoes of a glorious past. She has handed her watch to the young Tejas Mk 1A, stepping gracefully into the shadows of history.

Had she been flesh and blood, her eyes would be welling with tears today—not out of sorrow, but out of pride for a life completely spent in service of the Tricolour.

If you look closely at the morning mist over the tarmac, you can still see her silhouette: sleek, beautiful, and forever on guard.

An Indian sky without your silhouette feels a little emptier, a little less fierce. Goodbye, dearest saviour. Your final flight is over, but your legend is permanently etched into the clouds.
