Bangladesh’s senior Police officer forced Hindus to sell their land and flee

Benazir Ahmed is a retired Bangladeshi police officer who served as 30th Inspector General of Bangladesh Police. Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, who is under US sanctions, has been accused of taking hundreds of acres of land from Hindus in the country, causing some of them to flee. He is accused of trying to hide his identity while creating his Passport, with the intention to leave Bangladesh.

The Hindu Land Controversy :

Bangladeshi media houses report that Hindus/minorities “had no alternative but to sell the land. They were threatened, coerced and forced in various ways to sell the land.
Media houses like Dhaka tribune and Daily Prothmo report that Benazir’s reputation for snatching Hindu properties is not restricted to a single district. Rather, he has taken possession of Hindu properties in several Bangladeshi districts, forcing Hindu families to cede the land to him out of fear. Those who refused to sell their properties were subjected to a variety of intimidation tactics, including harassment from the law. The majority of these victims were compelled to flee the nation. Whilst Dhaka tribune mentions the myriad harassments, and daily Prothmo describes the religion of those who faced harassment as minorities, both the report only indirectly hint the land acquired by Benazir belonged to Hindus. Albeit the Daily star claerly mentions that Hindus gave away their land due to fear.

Presently, the court has ordered the attachment of the property of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed. Along with that, a total of 33 financial transaction accounts including his 27 bank accounts will be seized.

A total of 83 deed properties, various bank accounts are in this list.

Further properties belonging to his wife Jissan Mirza, and their three daughters, Farhin Rishta Binte Benazir, Tahsin Raisa Binte Benazir, and Zara Jerin Binte Benazir, were ordered to be seized by a Dhaka court on 12th June

Passport controversy:

Benazir Ahmed has consistently avoided using official passports intended for government employees, which is at the centre of the controversy. Benazir Ahmed chose to use regular passports during his illustrious career, which included holding positions like Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and finally IGP. This wouldn’t be suspicious in and of itself. But the way he purportedly got these passports and the extent he went to hide his real identity paint a disconcerting picture, according to Weekly Blitz claims.

Several theories have emerged to explain Benazir Ahmed’s aversion to official
passports. One possibility is a desire to conceal potential plans for acquiring citizenship in another country, something that becomes more complicated with a government-issued passport. Another theory suggests Benazir Ahmed might have sought a normal passport for the freedom of unfettered travel and the ability to leave the country quickly if necessary.

Some reports suggest that the Hindus who were forced to leave Bangladesh have now moved to India.
