Qatar will recruit 725 Bangladeshi soldiers to serve in various roles within the country, according to Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to Bangladesh’s chief adviser, speaking on the sidelines of the Earthna Summit in Doha. The hiring process is set to commence within the next two months.
Alam revealed that Qatar plans to hire 725 soldiers every three years, with efforts underway to increase this number. He noted that Bangladeshi soldiers have been employed in Kuwait for an extended period, and Qatar is now adopting a similar approach to bolster its workforce with Bangladeshi personnel.
In addition to the recruitment announcement, Alam addressed outstanding financial obligations from Bangladesh’s LNG imports from Qatar. He stated that the previous Sheikh Hasina government had accumulated unpaid dues amounting to hundreds of millions of US dollars. However, the interim government has prioritized settling these debts, having already cleared a significant portion. The remaining $37 million is expected to be paid within the next couple of days.
A high-level Bangladeshi delegation, led by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, is currently in Doha for the Earthna Summit 2025. Earlier today, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, met with Professor Yunus to discuss bilateral matters. The meeting was attended by key Bangladeshi officials, including Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman, Energy Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, and Principal Coordinator on SDG Affairs Lamiya Morshed.
