Recent satellite imagery which appeared on social media has revealed a significant development at China’s Yulin Naval Base in Hainan Province. The images show missiles being loaded onto a Type 094A Jin-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) docked at the pier. Notably, the open launch container lids are visible, providing a rare glimpse into the operational activity of one of China’s most advanced submarines.

Satellite images posted on social media showed that China was closing off the sea near Vietnam, sea area southwest of Hainan Province, where exercises are being held between Dec 18 to 21.
Japanese Defence Ministry says that the Type 052DL guided missile destroyer Dazhou (BS 135) has been deployed for the first time. China’s Navy has ostensibly kept a low profile in recent years when it commissions warships. The Dazhou was reportedly commissioned in April 2024 as part of the Eastern Fleet
The aircraft carrier Shandong and Type 052D guided missile destroyers of the PLA Navy have been deployed in the exercise area.

The Type 094A Jin-class SSBN spotted in the other satellite images, represents a cornerstone of China’s nuclear deterrent capabilities. These submarines are designed to operate as part of the country’s second-strike arsenal, ensuring a robust response capability in the event of a nuclear attack. The Jin-class can carry up to 16 ballistic missiles, making it a formidable platform for projecting strategic power.
Reports claims that Jin-class SSBNs are armed with Julang-series submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), specifically the Julang-2 (JL-2) and its more advanced successor, the Julang-3 (JL-3).
- Julang-2 (JL-2): With a range of approximately 7,223 km, the JL-2 is capable of targeting significant portions of the Asia-Pacific region and parts of the continental United States.
- Julang-3 (JL-3): This advanced missile boasts an extended range of up to 10,000 km, enabling it to strike nearly any location within the United States from secure positions in Chinese territorial waters.
The deployment of Type 094A submarines armed with JL-series missiles represents a key element of China’s growing naval capabilities. These submarines enable China to maintain a secure second-strike capability, even under the threat of preemptive attacks. The ability to operate stealthily and strike targets across vast distances makes them a critical component of China’s overall military strategy.
Yulin Naval Base: A Hub of Activity: Located in Hainan Province, the Yulin Naval Base serves as a key operational hub for China’s SSBN fleet. The base is strategically situated near the South China Sea, providing access to deep waters essential for submarine operations. The recent imagery underscores the base’s role in supporting China’s nuclear deterrence capabilities.
China’s advancements in submarine and missile technology are closely watched by military analysts worldwide. The Type 094A, coupled with the powerful JL-3 missile, demonstrates China’s intent to solidify its position as a major nuclear power.
