Final 3 Belgian C-130s Delivered to Pakistan Air Force

In November 2024, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) received the last three ex-Belgian C-130 aircraft, marking the end of an era for Belgium’s fleet of C-130s. The deliveries included:

  • PAAF 067 (Serial 4455, ex CH-01): Departed on Wednesday, November 27.
  • PAAF 068 (Serial 4470, ex CH-05): Departed on Friday, November 29.
  • PAAF 069 (Serial 4476, ex CH-07): Departed on Friday, November 29.

The video shows that on November 29, 2024, after 52 years of service at Belgium’s Melsbroek Air Base, the final Belgian C-130 took off, destined for Pakistan. The aircraft, flight PAAF069 (serial 4476), made its departure with some characteristic noise as it set out for an intermediate stop in Ankara, Turkey, before reaching its final destination in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. All three aircraft followed the route: Brussels – Esenboga (Turkey) – Rawalpindi (Pakistan).

The Belgian Air Component decommissioned its C-130H Hercules fleet in 2021, replacing them with Airbus A400M Atlas aircraft. As early as 2022, it was reported that one of the retired C-130Hs (CH-12) was spotted at Melsbroek Air Base painted in Pakistan Air Force livery, signifying the beginning of its new role.

The Pakistan Air Force, which operates a fleet of 16 C-130s, has been actively seeking additional aircraft to strengthen its tactical transport capabilities. This acquisition of seven to eight additional C-130s, including the ex-Belgian planes, is part of this initiative.

Advantages of the C-130 Hercules

The C-130 Hercules are built by the American company Lockheed Martin. The aircraft is renowned worldwide for its versatility and reliability in tactical airlift roles. Key advantages include:

  1. Proven Durability: The C-130 has been in continuous service since the 1950s, demonstrating exceptional performance in diverse and challenging environments.
  2. Tactical Flexibility: The aircraft is capable of short take-offs and landings on unprepared runways, making it ideal for missions in remote or austere locations.
  3. Payload Capacity: It can carry a wide range of cargo, including troops, vehicles, and humanitarian supplies, with a payload capacity of up to 20 tons.
  4. Multirole Capability: Beyond transport, the C-130 can be configured for medical evacuation, aerial refueling, search and rescue, and firefighting.
  5. Operational Range: Its long range and ability to refuel mid-air make it a strategic asset for extended operations.

With these attributes, the C-130 remains a cornerstone of many air forces, including Pakistan’s, providing critical support for military, humanitarian, and disaster relief operations. The addition of the ex-Belgian aircraft enhances the PAF’s transport fleet, ensuring continued operational readiness and flexibility.
