
Making India proud again the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has marked a significant achievement by successfully completing trials of the 1,000 kg Long-Range Glide Bomb (LRGB) ‘Gaurav’ launched from a Su-30 MKI aircraft. The tests took place from April 8 to 10, 2025, as announced in a Defence Ministry statement on Friday.
During the trials, the bomb was fitted to various stations on the aircraft and tested with different warhead setups, striking a land target on an island. The results demonstrated a striking range of almost 100 km with remarkable accuracy. High-ranking officials from DRDO and the Indian Air Force (IAF) were present to monitor and assess the trials.
Gaurav:
- Long Development Journey: The Gaurav LRGB took flight for its first test in 2014 and has since evolved through multiple upgrades. This extended timeline reflects the careful refinement typical of cutting-edge military tech, highlighting India’s dedication to perfecting its defense systems.
- Heavy Hitter: Tipping the scales at 1,000 kg, this glide bomb packs a serious punch. Its hefty payload enables it to carry powerful warheads, capable of smashing through tough targets like bunkers or airfields with devastating impact.
- Glides Over 100 km: Launched from high altitudes, the Gaurav can soar more than 100 kilometers to its target. This impressive range offers a standoff advantage, letting aircraft strike from afar and stay out of harm’s way.
- Smart Navigation: The bomb uses a hybrid navigation system, blending inertial navigation (INS) with GPS. This combo ensures pinpoint accuracy and keeps it on course, even if GPS signals get jammed.
- Fits Right In: Designed for aircraft like the Su-30 MKI, the Gaurav integrates smoothly with India’s existing fleet. This compatibility boosts its versatility and keeps deployment costs in check.
- Team Effort: Developed with help from private companies like Adani Defence and Bharat Forge, the Gaurav showcases a growing trend of public-private collaboration in India’s defense sector—a big step for innovation.
- Family Ties: It’s part of a broader family of glide bombs, including the wingless Gautham variant. This modular design gives mission planners flexibility to tweak range and payload as needed.
- High-Tech Guidance: With a digital control system in its guidance setup, the Gaurav boasts advanced electronics. This tech ensures precise strikes, cutting down on collateral damage while hitting the mark.
- Multi-Target Threat: Built to take out everything from airfields to hardened bunkers, its versatility makes it a go-to weapon for a wide range of missions, enhancing India’s tactical playbook.
- World-Class Contender: Matching systems like Israel’s Spice glide bombs in range and accuracy, the Gaurav puts India on the global map as a serious player in advanced military technology.
These features make the Gaurav LRGB a standout in India’s defense lineup, blending power, precision, and homegrown innovation!
The development was supported by key industry collaborators, including Adani Defence Systems & Technologies, Bharat Forge, and multiple MSMEs, who contributed to both design and manufacturing efforts.
These trials lay the groundwork for the bomb’s eventual adoption by the IAF. Certification and quality checks were facilitated by the Centre for Military Airworthiness & Certification and the Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the DRDO, IAF, and industry partners for their role in the trials, emphasizing that the LRGB ‘Gaurav’ will greatly enhance India’s military capabilities. Samir V Kamat, DRDO Chairman and Secretary of Defence R&D, also praised the team for their successful execution of the tests.
