ISIS-Linked Bangladeshi Network Dismantled in Malaysia; 36 Arrested

Malaysian authorities have arrested 36 Bangladeshi nationals accused of operating a radical militant cell inspired by Islamic State (IS) ideology, in a significant counter-terrorism operation conducted across Selangor and Johor. The three-phase operation, which began on April 24, 2025, targeted a network allegedly involved in spreading extremist beliefs, recruiting members, and plotting to destabilize the Bangladeshi government.

According to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), supported by the Special Branch’s intelligence efforts, uncovered the group’s activities, which included establishing recruitment cells within the Bangladeshi migrant community to indoctrinate individuals with radical ideologies and collect funds for terrorist activities. The group’s ultimate aim was to overthrow the legitimate government in Bangladesh.

Of the 36 individuals detained, five have been charged under Chapter VIA of Malaysia’s Penal Code, which pertains to terrorism-related offenses, in the Sessions Courts of Shah Alam and Johor Bahru. Fifteen others face deportation, while the remaining 16 are under further investigation for their roles in the militant network, as reported by Malay Mail on June 27, 2025.

Home Minister Saifuddin emphasized Malaysia’s firm stance against allowing the country to serve as a haven or transit point for foreign extremist movements. “The success of this operation demonstrates the efficiency and professionalism of Malaysia’s security forces, particularly the police, in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty, harmony, and public peace,” he said. He added that the Ministry of Home Affairs will continue to enhance intelligence capabilities and collaborate with domestic and international security agencies to ensure Malaysia remains free from terrorism threats.

The arrests highlight Malaysia’s proactive approach to countering the growing threat of extremist networks exploiting migrant communities, particularly the estimated 500,000 Bangladeshi workers in the country, many of whom are undocumented. The operation underscores the government’s commitment to national security and its resolve to act swiftly against any attempts to use Malaysia as a base for militant activities.
