In a significant diplomatic visit, Brigadier General Hamed Wahidi, Supreme Commander of the Iranian Air Force, arrived in Islamabad last week to explore avenues for a potential military partnership with Pakistan.
During his time in Pakistan, General Wahidi observed the ongoing Indus Shield exercises at the Moshav Air Force Base and engaged in strategic discussions with Air Marshal Babar at the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Headquarters. Of particular interest to Iran is Pakistan’s JF-17 Thunder Block III fighter jet—a multi-role, lightweight aircraft co-developed by Pakistan and China.
This interest in the JF-17 follows Azerbaijan’s acquisition of the same fighter jets earlier this year. Azerbaijan has purchased multi-role JF-17 Block III fighter jets from Pakistan reportedly under a $1.6 billion deal.
Iran’s interest in the JF-17 comes as it continues efforts to modernize its air fleet and strengthen its defensive capabilities, particularly in light of escalating tensions with Israel. Following the collapse of a proposed deal for 36 J-10C jets due to payment issues, Iran is now considering alternative options, including Pakistan’s JF-17 Thunder and Russia’s Su-57
