Pakistan Elevates its Representation in Afghanistan from chargé d’affaires to Ambassador– Will Relations Normalise?

A day after Talibana sent tanks to its border Pakistan, the government of Pakistan tried to normalise relations with taliban. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced that Islamabad is ready to promote its diplomatic representative in Kabul from the level of chargé d’affaires to ambassador. He wrote in a note that Pakistan’s relations with the Taliban are on a “positive track” following his recent visit to Kabul.

On Friday, the 9th of July, Ishaq Dar wrote in a note on his X page: “I am confident that this step will lead to increased interactions and deepening bilateral cooperation in the economic, security, and trade fields.”

The Pakistani Foreign Minister emphasized that this move is aimed at increasing mutual cooperation and promoting further exchanges between the two brotherly countries. But despite improving diplomatic relations, Pakistan, like other countries, has not yet recognized the Taliban administration.

Recently, an informal, trilateral meeting was held in Beijing between the foreign ministers of China, Pakistan, and the Taliban. In the month of May Pakistani and Chinese authorities have already met taliban twice; on May 28th in Afghanistan and on May 21st in Beijing.

After the meeting, the Chinese Foreign Minister announced that Pakistan and the Taliban agreed to send ambassadors to each other’s countries soon. Wang Yi said that China welcomes this and will continue to support the strengthening of relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Currently, diplomatic relations between the Taliban and Pakistan are at the chargé d’affaires level. Obaidur Rehman Nizamani is the chargé d’affaires of the Pakistani embassy in Kabul, and Sardar Ahmad Shakib is the chargé d’affaires of the Taliban embassy in Islamabad.

Diplomatic sources in Islamabad previously told Afghanistan International that Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi will visit Pakistan in the near future. The exact timing of the visit is not yet clear. Muttaqi is likely to visit Islamabad in June.
