Why Pakistan Named Its Retaliatory Op Against Indian in May 2025 as “Bunyan Marsoos”?

After India’s decisive counter-terrorism strikes in the first week of May 2025, Pakistan launched a military retaliation on May 10, 2025, codenamed Operation Bunyan Marsoos.

The trigger was Operation Sindoor, executed by the Indian Armed Forces on the night of May 7, 2025. In this precision tri-service operation, India targeted nine terror infrastructure sites linked to banned Pakistan-based groups — Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) — across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoJK). The strikes were a direct response to the brutal Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, which claimed 26 innocent lives.

The Syedna Bilal Camp!

One of the prominent sites struck during Operation Sindoor was the Syedna Bilal Camp (also known as Markaz Syedna Bilal or Syedna Bilal Masjid complex) in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Indian intelligence identified the facility as a major JeM staging area and transit camp. Located opposite the Red Fort in Muzaffarabad, it served as a critical hub for:

  • Weapons and explosives training
  • Jungle survival training
  • Logistics and final preparation for terrorists before infiltrating into Indian territory across the Line of Control (LoC)

The sprawling complex, spread over 8–10 kanals, included a three-storey mosque building with a Hijama (cupping therapy) centre on the ground floor, family quarters, office spaces, and the headquarters of Al-Rehmat Trust — JeM’s charitable front.

Reports indicated that JeM’s office and transit camp were situated on the first floor adjacent to the mosque, and Pakistani Special Services Group (SSG) personnel were reportedly involved in training activities at the site.

The Inspiration Behind Pakistan’s Codename

According to accounts from the operation, one of the walls inside the Syedna Bilal Centre bore a religious inscription: “Bunyan Marsoos” (بنيان مرصوص).

In Arabic, “Bunyan” refers to a building or structure, and “Marsoos” (Marsūs) implies something firmly compacted, cemented, or fused together — often translated as a “solid cemented structure”, “impenetrable wall”, or even “structure made of molten lead”. The verse emphasises unity, discipline, and unbreakable resolve among fighters and followers.

Pakistan chose the name Operation Bunyan Marsoos to project its armed forces as a solid, united, and impenetrable front in response to India’s strikes. Pakistani statements framed the operation as a show of national cohesion and defiance. Though the inspiration mostly came from a wall on Jasih E Mohammed’s transit camp.

Pakistan appeared to draw inspiration directly from the very JeM terror facility that Indian forces had neutralised. By invoking a religious verse found inside a known terrorist transit camp, Pakistan Army sought to blend religious symbolism with military messaging — portraying its retaliation as a “holy” or principled stand.

Indian analysts and media viewed this as an attempt to rally domestic support and project strength after the dismantling of key terror infrastructure. However, many in India saw it as ironic: a terror-linked site was being used to inspire the codename of a strike against the very nation that had acted to eliminate cross-border terror threats.
