Update: Chinese Type 004 Nuclear-Powered Aircraft Carrier

A satellite image from Jan 1st 2025, shows developments around a new Chinese CATOBAR Type 004 aircraft carrier. reports claim complete overhaul of the flight deck on the full-scale mock-up in Wuhan. One of the marked images translates to the “aircraft carrier island”. The ‘island’ of an aircraft carrier serves as the control hub for flight-deck operations and the overall management of the ship.

China is reportedly working on another CATOBAR (Catapult-assisted take-off barrier-arrested recovery) carrier, potentially nuclear-powered, known as the Type 004. • Unlike the conventionally-powered Type 003, the Type 004 will be significantly larger and is expected to be China’s first carrier with nuclear marine propulsion. Reports suggest up to four units may be constructed. The Type 004 will likely be equipped with J-15 and J-35 fighters, Xian KJ-600 airborne early warning and control aircraft, anti-submarine warfare planes of the People’s Liberation Army Naval Air Force, and stealth combat drones.

There were previous speculations about the carrier accommodating J-20 aircraft. However, in a program on China Central Television, PLA Navy Rear Admiral Zhang Zhaozhong ruled out this possibility, stating that the aircraft isn’t structurally suited for carrier operations. Additionally, it lacks folding wings for compact storage, and its stealth coating could deteriorate in a maritime environment.”
