Syrian Officials Visit ISI Headquarters in Islamabad

A high-level delegation from Syria’s Ministry of Interior paid a visit to the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) headquarters in Islamabad last week, in what is being seen as a step toward strengthening intelligence cooperation between the two countries.

During the August 4 visit, the Syrian officials were given a comprehensive briefing on the ISI’s operational structure and its “counterterrorism” capabilities, according to sources familiar with the meeting. The discussions are believed to have focused on intelligence sharing, operational coordination, and strategies for addressing transnational threats.

The ISI, Pakistan’s premier intelligence agency, has long played a significant role in the country’s internal security architecture and regional intelligence operations. The visit by Syrian officials underscores growing engagement between Damascus and Islamabad in the security domain, particularly amid regional challenges involving militancy, cross-border networks, and extremist movements.

Although no official statement was issued detailing specific agreements or initiatives, analysts suggest such exchanges are aimed at fostering direct lines of communication between the two security establishments. The timing of the visit comes against the backdrop of evolving security alignments in the Middle East and South Asia, where cooperation on counterterrorism is seen as mutually beneficial.

The meeting at the ISI headquarters marks another instance of Pakistan’s outreach to foreign security agencies, reflecting Islamabad’s broader strategy to expand diplomatic and security ties with countries beyond its immediate neighborhood.
